Amsterdam comes to Manchester after all
4 Apr 2020
HOME fans missing out on the tour of Amsterdam can now watch it free online
A critically-acclaimed play due at HOME later this month can be seen now, free, courtesy of the Actors Touring Company, the Orange Tree Theatre and Theatre Royal Plymouth.
Theatregoers were disappointed when the much-anticipated national tour of Maya Arad Yasur’s prize-winning play Amsterdam was cancelled due to the Covid-19 crisis.
But the drama, directed by former Royal Exchange associate Matthew Xia (his first as ATC artistic director), due in Manchester from April 15-18, has now been made available free on YouTube here, in a recording made at the Orange Tree last autumn.
A pregnant Israeli violinist living in a canal-side Amsterdam apartment receives a mysterious unpaid gas bill from 1944. Her feelings of disquiet are a throwback to a devastating past, and the play charts her attempts to make sense of present events.
Like most theatres, the Orange Tree closed two weeks ago. Over the coming weeks selected items from the theatre’s archive, as well as articles about past productions, interviews, insights and podcasts will all be available on the Orange Tree website and YouTube channel.
