Opera company launches appeal to extend its community work

Opera North is asking people to help “light up lives” in schools, communities and homes this Christmas, by making a donation to a special fund for community-based music.

The Leeds-based company says a £15 donation could help its “In Harmony” team to create an online resource for children, while £50 could allow young care-leavers to experience the company’s new Leeds “soundwalk”, in which commentary and music accompany a walking tour of part of the city.

For £150 Opera North can arrange an outdoor performance at a local care home, while £500 could help to film its Whistle Stop Opera: Cinderella for viewing online by schools and families across the north this Christmas.

Opera North has organised an extensive range of community activities online since the pandemic began, and is currently preparing a new soundwalk, As You Are, featuring the Chorus and Orchestra of Opera North, and the Whistle Stop Cinderella, which was to have toured this autumn and winter. The show is being filmed to give schools and families the chance to watch it free as an online alternative to a Christmas panto.

The company’s general director, said: “The challenges of this year have been immense, and we are determined to return to live performance and to resume touring opera as soon as we are able. But we remain committed to using music to create extraordinary experiences every day for the communities we serve. Any donations towards our work will be very gratefully received.”
