New name "better reflects" importance to city

Leeds Grand Theatre's owner has taken a new name – Leeds Heritage Theatres – to highlight its role in the city’s consciousness as it attempts to steer a way through the Covid-19 pandemic.

Formerly named Leeds Grand Theatre and Opera House Ltd, the company has three local venues: Opera North’s base Leeds Grand, the City Varieties theatre – once home of TV’s “Good Old Days” show – and Hyde Park Picture House.

Chief executive Chris Blythe said the previous name “was not befitting of our company, and the role our venues and people play within the Leeds arts scene”.

Registered charity Leeds Heritage Theatres has more than 200 staff and has been dealt a big financial blow by the pandemic, losing almost all its usual annual income.
