A Topsy Turvy year for Theatre Porto

Ellesmere Port's specialist children's theatre, Theatre Porto, marks its 40th anniversary this year and is throwing a three-day party to set off the celebrations.

Theatre Porto's Topsy Turvy returns to the town's Whitby Park from August 7-9, when the much-loved festival will enliven the park and theatre with outdoor performances, live music, workshops, creative activities and unexpected moments of discovery for children and families. A special preview event on August 6 will launch a children's art installation, alongside a family quiz fundraiser.

Festival entry is almost entirely free with a weekend festival pass (bookable online, see below), though a small selection of indoor performances require tickets, and donations are welcome for they help Theatre Porto to keep the festival open to all.

Among this year's highlights are three specially-selected indoor performances: At Sea by Life and Limb Puppets, a visually stunning puppet adventure; 80's Party Gameshow - Family Edition! from Dizzy O'Dare, and Life Behind the Mask by Jack Evans Dance, a dance performance combining live movement with digital technology, followed by an interactive audience experience.

Children will also discover the mysterious Moonlings, gentle visitors who have landed in Whitby Park for the weekend, while the new Makers Green will become a space where artists and families can build dens, fly kites and create imaginative environments together.

Artistic director Nina Hajiyianni said "Topsy Turvy has become a celebrated highlight of our annual programme. This year is particularly special as it marks the beginning of our 40th year celebrations."

Topsy Turvy has become a popular fixture of the town's summer calendar, bringing together artists, families and local communities to celebrate creativity in all its forms.
