Amelia Bullmore (Riot Women, The Buccaneers, Happy Valley, Gentleman Jack, Scott and Bailey, Coronation Street) returns to the stage to star as Penelope in the major UK revival of Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad - a retelling of the story of The Odyssey - at York Theatre
Royal (October 10-31).

Immortalised as the devoted and faithful wife to the glorious Odysseus, in reality Penelope waits 20 years for her husband to return from the Trojan War. In Atwood's novella, the author gives voice to the otherwise abandoned Penelope and her maids and offers her side of the story - a tale of injustice, betrayal and revenge.
Premiered at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2007, this is the first major UK revival since then.
Amelia Bullmore said: “The Penelopiad manages to be funny, dark, moving and provocative by turns. And it’s Margaret Atwood, so the writing is uniquely brilliant. I think audiences will love how playful it is and how directly it connects with them.”
Director Juliet Forster added: “It's wonderful to have Amelia to lead the cast for The Penelopiad. Penelope is such a fascinating and complex character in Margaret Atwood’s retelling, and I know Amelia will do her justice!”
Further casting is still to be announced.
