British Youth Music Theatre - the largest commissioner of musicals in the UK - is partnering with Salford's Lowry for Worn Out, a musical re-telling of Grimm's The 12 Dancing Princesses (August 1-3).

Featuring a score that mixes classic and contemporary Broadway with a pop twist and an contemporary book, Worn Out turns the original into a modern musical where fairy-tale fantasy meets female rebellion.

Composer Meg McGrady said: "It's rewarding and exciting to be working with young people on a new musical about the importance of community, collective action and why we fight for democracy.

"In the current political climate, it feels essential to start these discussions about why democracy is both essential and imperfect, but why we fight for it anyway."

Zoe Morris, who has written the book and lyrics, said: "Our show is about sisterhood, community and fighting for what you believe in and I can’t think of a better community to be developing that with than BYMT.”

Matthew Eames, head of contemporary theatre abd commissioning at the Lowry, said: “We are delighted to be working with BYMT for the first time. We look forward to sharing what I am sure will be a transformative experience for all involved.”
