Joel Montague to star as the Grinch at Leeds Playhouse

West End musicals star Joel Montague will play the title character in a new production of Dr Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical at Leeds Playhouse for the festive season (November 19-January 16).
Montague played Buddy in the West End revival of Elf the Musical at the Aldwych Theatre last year. Other West End credits include King George III in Hamilton for more than two years.
Joel said: “Getting to play The Grinch is an absolute dream for me. As a fan of Dr Seuss, the iconic Grinch character and Jim Carrey’s unforgettable performance in the movie, I’m thrilled to bring The Grinch to Leeds this Christmas.
"It's such a fun, heart-warming story for audiences of all ages, and I can’t wait to cause mischief in Who-ville and across Leeds!”
Director Tom Wright said: “Joel is a phenomenal talent. Having him lead this production reflects the ambition we want to see across our stages: a home for nationally-recognised artists, as well as for the exceptional talent we have right here in Leeds and Yorkshire.”
The Grinch is part of Wright's inaugural season at the playhouse, which opens with a new production and the first major revival in over a decade of August Wilson's Fences, co-produced by Leeds Playhouse, Headlong, Lyric Hammersmith Theatre and HOME Manchester, and the regional premiere of Peanut Butter and Blueberries, the debut play by Leeds playwright Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan.
