Kinks musical Sunny Afternoon starts a major new UK tour at Manchester's Palace Theatre in October (10-18).

Kinks founder Ray Davies, who wrote the original story, music and lyrics, said today: “In these times of political uncertainties, it's a relief to know that Sunny Afternoon is on the horizon to lift our spirits”.

First seen in the West End nearly a decade ago, when it won four Olivier awards, and set against the backdrop of Britain on the cusp of the rebellious 1960s, the show celebrates The Kinks, one of Britain’s most iconic bands.

Charting their highs and agonising lows, Sunny Afternoon (the title of one of their finest songs, in case you're wondering) tells their story through a back-catalogue of chart-toppers, including You Really Got Me, Lola and All Day and All of the Night.

As well as Ray's contribution, Sunny Afternoon has a book by Joe Penhall, whose work for the stage and movies has won several awards. Producer Sonia Friedman said: “From the moment Ray Davies, Joe Penhall, director Ed Hall, and I began developing this musical, I knew it was something extremely special and it proved to be so as we opened to rave reviews and won many awards.

"Now, I’m thrilled we’re bringing back our celebratory, Olivier-award-winning best new musical for a new UK tour."

Other northern dates include the Sunderland Empire (November 4-8); Grand Opera House, York (November 11-15); Leeds Grand (February 24-28, 2026); Stockton Globe (April 14-18, 2026); Blackpool Grand (April 28-May 2, 2026) and Liverpool Empire (May 10-23, 2026).
