Following a visit to Auschwitz and the lack of information there about the persecution of gay men during the Nazi era, Liverpool-based writer and director Danny Partington did deeper research on the subject. His play Lewd and Lascivious Acts is the result.
Produced by Danny's Marauders Theatre Company, it was runner-up in Liverpool Homotopia’s LGBT+ script submissions in 2023, got its full debut in Dublin last year and arrives now at Salford's Kings Arms (November 6-7), and Liverpool's Arts Bar in Hope Street (November 8-9).
The play, featuring James Sprague, Evan Watkinson, Callum Parker, James Jarman, Sam Blackhurst and Charlie Forrest, follows Freddie and Paul, two gay men living in 1930s Germany, balancing their desire to live a life of liberation with hiding in the closet as Fascism rises around them.
Danny began directing when a member of Liverpool University's drama society, and on graduation in 2014 formed the Marauders company.
"We performed frequently around our then-home of Huddersfield and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, culminating in a critically-acclaimed adaptation of Dr Faustus," Danny explained. "It's great now to be back on home turf with this. That one of the performances is on November 9, Remembrance Sunday, isn't a coincidence."
