Following its win in Liverpool's Tip Tray Theatre What Happens Next? competition, Sean McLoughlin’s debut play I Am Steven Gerrard is a hot ticket for its run at the city's Hope Street Theatre later this month (January 24-28).

Huyton-based McLoughlin has created "a story of football, aspiration, music, Steven Gerrard, loneliness, reality television, love, religion, friends, loss, passion, enemies, Davina McColl, politics, ambition, family, virginity, past generations, and the impact they leave behind".

TipTray artistic directors Maisy Gordon and Evan Byrne said: “Sean’s play captures the beating heart of the city beautifully through his pitch-perfect poetry. When paired with Joe Cowin's powerful performance and Amy Roberts' direction, the play soars."

The production has received Arts Council England funding alongside its £1000 competition prize, dramaturgical support from Olivier award-winning Papatango Theatre company and support and theatre hire from Hope Street Theatre.

The week before I Am Steven Gerrard will see the second season of What Happens Next?, in which eight new productions will go through the same judging process and one will gain the same level of support for a week-long run in January 2025. Round one of WHN? is on January 18, round two on January 19 and the final heat on January 20.
