The Royal Exchange Theatre has acquired the services of Rachel Quinney as its new Director of Producing from August. She is currently senior producer at London' Donmar Warehouse.
For those who don't know what a director of producing might do, while artistic director and co-CEO Selina Cartmell takes care of which show will be presented with which casts, Rachel will oversee the producing and production teams as they realise the theatre’s artistic ambitions. It's akin to a film producer role, taking care of the nuts and bolts of each production.
Rachel Quinney is a theatre producer with almost 20 years of experience across producing, planning, and arts administration. She made her first move into producing with Paines Plough and was subsequently head of administration at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre for four seasons.
She moved to the National Theatre as head of planning and moved up to producer, leading on a wide range of shows including Hadestown, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Dear England, The Witches and several more.
She is currently senior producer at Donmar, where she has overseen productions from The Cherry Orchard to Dealer's Choice and The Maids.
She said: “I’m delighted to be joining Selina and the Royal Exchange team in the 50th anniversary year of this unique and magical theatre. Growing up just across the Pennines, I was always excited to travel to see a Royal Exchange show, and I’m thrilled I’ll now be helping to deliver artistic excellence in this incredible space.”
Selina Cartmell said: “Rachel’s appointment will be instrumental in leading our producing department and all our artist-led work, harnessing new opportunities locally, nationally, and internationally. Rachel brings an inspiring range of experience and passion, and we all look forward enormously to working with her.”
