Sutara Gayle comes HOME

Award-winning The Legends of Them - written and performed by reggae star, actor and Brixton luminary Sutara Gayle - has two Northern dates, at HOME Manchester (October 17-18), and Leeds Playhouse (November 18-19).

The production originally premiered at Brixton House in Lambeth, London in September 2023 and won an OFFIE award for best performance piece. It later transferred to London's Royal Court Theatre for a three-week run last December, where it gathered enthusiastic reviews.

The show charts the story of Sutara Gayle’s unusual life, including being a pioneering female DJ on London’s reggae scene in the 1980s and her sister Dorothy "Cherry" Groce's unprovoked shooting by police in 1985, sparking the Brixton "Uprising" of that year. That landmark event in Black British history provides the socio-political backdrop to the story.

Nina Lyndon, co-founder of producers Hackney Showroom Theatre Company, said: “Sutara is an extraordinary artist with a unique gift; it's been an honour to work with her. This piece brings together music, Black British history and spiritual transcendence.”
