The time has come for ...blackbird hour

Though shortlisted for the Royal Exchange Manchester's Bruntwood Prize back in 2019, playwright babirye bukilwa’s …blackbird hour is only now getting its first full stage production, at Leeds Playhouse (March 13-15).

Eshe hasn’t left her flat. Loved ones keep reaching out, phoning and showing up at her front door to “save” her. She’s not saying anything back, until, in the dark early hours, surrounded by half-eaten food, dirty washing and a damn good playlist, she focuses on the letter in front of her.

babirye bukilwa said: “It’s been profoundly transformative to be able to work towards …blackbird hour being experienced on stage. This play was written almost a decade ago – it was my first play and so it’s been a long time coming.

"I’m honoured to bring Eshe’s story back again and to be working with Malakai Sargeant, who believed in this play and in me back in 2018. It’s our fourth collaboration and it’s going to be the best yet.”

Director Malakaï Sargeant added: “Not to speak in cliches, but it's genuinely an honour and pleasure to be directing …blackbird hour in its first full production.

"This special play wouldn’t be what it is now without the contributions of all the Black creatives who have shaped it over the years. I can’t wait to share my take on Eshe’s world."
