Theatr Clwyd 50th anniversary season trio

Posters for Theatr Clwyd's productions of Under milk Wood, Twelfth Night and Atlantis

Newly-renovated and reopened Theatr Clwyd has announced its 50th anniversary season, which includes Dylan Thomas's classic Under Milk Wood, Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and climate drama Atlantis at the head of the 2026 spring birthday offering.

First up is Dylan Thomas's iconic Under Milk Wood (March 16-April 4); a masterpiece by any standard, directed by the theatre's artistic director Kate Wasserberg. The eccentric villagers of Llareggub tumble through lost love, scandal, fantasy and song in a world both tender and funny. This accessible staging will integrate BSL, creative captioning and audio description into the show as part of Craidd, a collaboration between five Welsh organisations attempting to improve the representation of deaf and disabled people across the Welsh theatre sector, both on stage and behind the scenes. Following its Mold run, the show will tour to Cardiff, Milford Haven, and Bangor.

Shakespeare's Twelfth Night (April 25-May 16) will be presented in a glitter-infused, party-filled production by Flintshire’s rising Welsh director Juliette Manon, who was Theatr Clwyd’s recipient of the Carne Traineeship for Directors in Wales. When a shipwreck separates twins, disguise, desire and deception set a remote island alight. Nobles become servants, friends become lovers, genders are blurred, and love gets gloriously tangled. Access performances include captioned, BSL and audio-described dates. After its Mold premiere, the production will visit Cardiff’s Sherman Theatre.

Atlantis, written during the Covid lockdown by Emily White (June 6-July 4), was the winner of the George Devine Award and this will be its premiere.

The sea is rising and a Welsh coastal town's inhabitants are told they will become Britain’s first climate refugees. As Bryn fights to save his home, Gwen and her grandchildren march to save the planet. Family drama collides with global crisis in a story of resilience. The production will be directed by Olivier-nominated Guy Meirion Jones.

Kate Wasserberg said of the 50th birthday season: “ With an award-winning new play, a fresh take on Shakespeare’s comedy of self-discovery and a major new production of Wales’ iconic play, we’re celebrating the best of Welsh talent and offering something for everyone.”
