Tim: tiny no longer

Salford-based theatre group Uncurbed Collective brings its unique new take on A Christmas Carol to Manchester's Contact Theatre this Christmas (December 2-16).

Tiny Tim is a disability-led reimagining of the Dickens original that puts the spotlight on the youngest member of the Cratchit family.

In many retellings of the story, Tiny Tim is often seen as a symbol of pity - but in this one he "stands up to be counted". The show is "bold, funny and apologetic: forget sainthood and suffereing; Tim (played by Daryll Duncan) wants karaoke, chips and a pina colada."

Written by James Varney, a member of Manchester arts community The Writing Squad, with members of Uncurbed's ensemble, the story is changed into one of "voice, agency and joyful rebellion".

Assistant director Kelly Hoyle said: “Tiny Tim is powerful, fun and full of surprises. There’s a lot of talk in the media at the minute about visibility, and it’s important audiences see disabled artists at the forefront of the arts. We want people to see disabled artists leading the way and showing that anything’s possible when you take control of your own story.”

Uncurbed Collective is a disabled-led organisation, based in Salford but working across Greater Manchester. Established in 2000, the collective has spent 25 years challenging perceptions and expanding access.
