Theatre@41 is York is co-producing Selene, a new show by theatre company Wright&Grainger.

It's a work with an unusual pedigree: the subject matter is the Greek goddess of the moon - the Greek gods being a popular subject choice for the company; Alexander Wright and Phil Grainger are collaborating on the show with Australian performer Megan Drury, and most of the first half of next year will see the company and show touring in Denmark and Australia, with a couple of the company's previous works thrown into the mix.

Wright&Grainger is an award-winning company whose previous shows have received critical acclaim here and abroad, telling stories from Greek mythology as if they were happening today. Selene is a sister show to the company's acclaimed Helios and is about "the goddess, the dark side of the moon, and all the wild stuff inside of us".

Selene is currently being rehearsed at Theatre@41 in the city's Monkgate - an intimate, independent theatre run almost entirely by volunteers. This partnership with Wright&Grainger is the first of its kind for the organisation.

Theatre manager Tom Bellerby, said: “A key part of our mission is supporting the creation of exceptional new work by artists from York and Yorkshire. Throughout the year Wright&Grainger will also be contributing to Create@41, our new artist development programme, supporting emerging

artists in the city by sharing their skills and experience.”

Alexander Wright said: “We make shows that tour around the world and we spend a lot of time on the road, so to be making a new show with one of our favourite places in our home city is an absolute dream.

"Theatre@41 is becoming a flagship venue in the north as a home for new artists, touring work, offbeat shows and wilder ideas. We’re chuffed to be a part of that.

“We’re making Selene with Megan Drury, a really amazing performer and theatre maker from Australia, and the show starts its life on the other side of the world. We are touring Selene for five months across Australia and New Zealand before heading back home and, importantly, back here to Theatre@41.

"The team at Theatre@41 has just opened up a whole new chapter - we’re proud to be working with them, and we’re excited to take the show out on the road, and then to bring it home. There’s a lot of love and trust and respect in all of it.

Selene will be performed at Theatre@41 as part of the theatre’s 2026 summer season. The company will also perform Helios at Theatre@41 for one performance on February 5 (tickets here).
