Hull's Martha Godber - the daughter of award-winning playwright John - has a new play, Jesse North Is Broken coming up at the York Theatre Royal Studio (May 11-14).
Written and also performed by Martha, the play follows 25-year-old Jesse from Hull, a carer on minimum wage, trying to keep the elderly alive while trying to live her own messy, chaotic life. Told over one night, the action moves from care shift to the dance floor, from late-night kebab to an early morning call-out as she works in a system that undervalues her.
Martha said, “I’m passionate about creating female characters who are unapologetic, bold and command the stage, celebrating the northern female voice in all its complexity.
"At its heart, the show explores connection, pain, love and loss, set against the realities of government policy, the care system and the social pressures of a working-class town. I hope it resonates deeply with audiences.”
