Stage, film and television actor Daniel Weyman (Gandalf in Amazon Prime's The Lord of the Rings: The Ring of Power) takes centre stage at the Tanya Moiseiwitsch Playhouse, Sheffield, in Buffoon (July 16-18) from Aisha Khan Productions, a new producing company dedicated to premiering international contemporary theatre rarely seen or heard in the UK.
By award-winning Canadian playwright and novelist Anosh Irani, Buffoon tells the story of Felix, born to circus folk who prefer trapezing over parenting. Growing up alone, surviving extraordinary encounters and heartbreaking experiences, the clown - the Buffoon - is born.
Buffoon won a major Canadian award for outstanding new play in 2020 and has been celebrated by critics across Canada and America.
Anosh Irani said: “Buffoon began with an image from my childhood that haunted me for years: a clown from one of my grand-aunt’s paintings. I found myself wondering about the wound behind the make-up. The play took almost 15 years to evolve from a larger, circus story into one man’s quest for love, family, and belonging."
Aisha Khan said: “Anosh’s writing is poetic yet piercingly honest. Felix the clown’s extraordinary world, realised through Daniel Weyman’s performance of striking vulnerability, maximises theatre’s superpowers of immediacy, telling deeply personal stories and being funny and tragic in the same breath."
