Another new musical version of The Sorcerer's Apprentice (one has already been announced for Christmas at HOME Manchester) arrives at Buxton Opera House from June 2-6 - before it magics its way off to New York.
This family theatre experience promises a mix of live magic, original music and puppetry to tell the classic story of Gunda (Philippa O'Hara), a schoolgirl who discovers an extraordinary power and must face fierce competition for the chance to become the
sorcerer’s apprentice.

Among the cast of the Buxton Sorcerer is local favourite Jennifer Hague, who returns to the Opera House after appearing there as Mrs Lovett in the community production of Sweeney Todd (2022); the Queen in pantomime Sleeping Beauty (2022), and as Clara the shoemaker in last year’s festive family production The Elves and The Shoemaker.
Jennifer joins a company of returning performers including Philippa O’Hara as Gunda, James Grimm as Dad and Iris Schmid as Puppeteer (all previously in The Vanishing Elephant). The creative team includes writer Charles Way, director Paul Bosco McEneaney and puppetry designer Helen Foan.
The show is a co-production between Buxton Opera House, Belfast-based Cahoots NI and New York's Victory Theatre, where it will transfer early next year.
