Pendle-based Callisto Theatre is a new professional company touring to venues around the north west, focusing on plays with small casts, suitable for performing at small theatres, pub theatres and other smaller venues.
The company's first production is a rare revival of Frank McGuinness's drama The Match Box, a one-woman show featuring character Sal, who reveals the unexpected and shocking events that have brought her to be living alone on a tiny remote island.
Sal will be played by Callisto founder Jessica Rawson, an actor, director and theatre-maker with 12 years experience in theatres in London and across the north-west. Jessica started Callisto to provide affordable professional theatre to one of the UK’s most deprived areas, gathering industry professionals she has previously worked with to offer something unique to her home town and other rural areas.
As well as her connection to Burnley and Pendle, Jess has links with Salford; she has been part of the Salford and Manchester theatre scene for many years. She has also worked as an actor and director at Salford Arts Theatre and as a guest lecturer at the University of Salford.
The play is being directed by Eleanor Felton, a Glasgow-based director and former resident assistant director at the Citizens.
The Match Box strikes out at Colne Little Theatre (September 5-7) and The King's Arms, Salford (September 12-13).
