Cutting edge contemporary dance at Salford's Lowry

Salford's Lowry has launched a new international contemporary season of theatre, dance, circus and more starting this autumn and featuring award-winning shows and new works including three Lowry co-commissions.

Matthew Eames, who is the Lowry's head of contemporary performance and commissioning, said: “2025 marks a quarter of a century of Lowry bringing creativity to Salford, and our commitment to presenting the best new and contemporary work from across the UK and internationally continues."

The season features:

Circus and visual theatre group Nuua Company from Finland, which presents Meanwhile (September 5), a mix of dramatic atmospheres and minimalistic comedy through juggling, object manipulation and visual theatre.

Art for Rainy Days' How a Spiral Works
Art for Rainy Days' How a Spiral Works

How A Spiral Works (September 21) - a newly-formed performance collective, Art For Rainy Days, invites the audience to experience a meditative journey that challenges the fast-paced, spectacle-driven norms of contemporary circus.

Disco Queen! (September 24) - The determination, athleticism and glittering spectacle of freestyle dance from Bradford-based dance maker Ella Tighe.

Stuntman (September 27). Explosive physical performance exploring the relationships between violence and masculinity through stunts and satire.

Liam Francis: Alchemy.(September 30). Co-commissioned by the Lowry, the Liam Francis Dance Company introduces a deeply personal double bill exploring identity, community, and transformation.

Co-commissioned by the Lowry, the Anglo-Belgian performance company Reckless Sleepers premieres Binary Opposition (October 7-8)m which takes place in a large construction that resembles two rooms, with identical walls and floors.

Mufutau Yusuf in Impasse

Impasse by Nigerian-Irish performer and choreographer Mufutau Yusuf (October 10), an attempt to understand the politics of the Black body in contemporary western society.

Black Sheep by Curious Directive October 21). Led by artistic director Jack Lowe, the award-winning theatre company creates a perfomance focused on science and society.

Not Truly Dead. Ghost stories by M R James, performed by R M Lloyd Parry (October 25). Three tales of the restless dead by the master of the English ghost story.

1 Degree Celsius by Sung Im Her (Nov 4), is about climate change. Born in South Korea, Sung Im Her brings her signature style, pulsating music and dynamic lighting design to a group of seven dancers,

Co-commissioned by Lowry, Handle With Care (November 4) is conceived and created by Belgian theatre-performance-group Ontroerend Goed, which puts the audience in control. “We provide the structure, you shape the experience. Choose your role, take the lead or observe as others make choices that steer the performance in unexpected directions."

Triptych Theatre presents the award-winning Vermin (November 22), a black psycho-dramedy about love, buried grief... and rats.
