Grand theatre: Blackpool Grand after the first phase of its restoration project

Extensive restoration and repairs on Blackpool's historic Grand Theatre have been completed thanks to £450,000 grant from Arts Council England’s Capital Investment Programme.

The renovation of the iconic "GRAND: illuminated sign is the finishing touch for the Grade II* theatre - one of the UK's finest, often referred to as Frank Matcham's masterpiece, honouring the legendary theatre architect who designed it and masterminded its opening in1894.

Repairs to the building’s stonework, replacement of damaged brickwork, restoration of the Victorian iron rainwater system and replacement of large areas of slate and lead on the two acres of roof will ensure the safety of the building and allow audiences and visitors to get into parts of the theatre that have been closed to the public for some years.

The Arts Council award marks the first phase of funding towards a £15 million capital development plan that will future-proof the theatre and the area surrounding it.
