New Contemporary season at Salford's Lowry

Salford's Lowry arts centre has launched its latest season of contemporary plays for the autumn, bringing together an ambitious programme of theatre and performance.

The Lowry's director of theatre and performance, Matthew Eames, said: “This season showcases extraordinary artists making work of real urgency and ambition. The shows reflect the richness and diversity of contemporary performance and our commitment to work that is bold, relevant and rooted in the world around us.”

Poster for Lowry show Blaze FM The Big House

:: Blaze FM: The Big House, which made its Edinburgh Fringe debut last year. Co-written by acclaimed grime MC Jammz and playwright James Meteyard, and directed by Maggie Norris, the political theatre show weaves together grime, garage, drill and jungle tracks during an 80-minute performance (September 17-19, age guidance 16+).

:: SELENE, an explosion of an ancient myth about the moon, from award-winning company Wright & Grainger. Based in rural North Yorkshire, the duo weaves immersive worlds from music and spoken word and since 2016 the company's retellings of ancient Greek myths have toured internationally. Written and created by Alexander Wright and Phil Grainger, and told by Megan Drury (September 25-26, age guidance 14+).

:: Madonna On The Rocks is Marie Hamilton’s insight into motherhood, inspired by her own experience of post-natal depression and capturing the messy reality of keeping dreams alive while raising a child. The show's music, by award-winning composer Ben Osborn, blends pop bangers and punk electronica (September 30-October 1, age guidance 14+).

:: Thanks for Being Here by Belgian experimental theatre company Ontroerend Goed, serves as a thank-you note to the audience and a celebration of togetherness, whether within the confines of a theatre or out on the streets (October 6-7). The company's last show in the region was Handle with Care in Leeds: they posted a box of ideas and let the audience get on with it...

:: Woodhill: pushing the form of documentary theatre and dance, this is an explosive true story by multi-award-winning LUNG. Three men at Woodhill prison are dead. The families demand answers. Punching choreography and unflinching beats tell the hidden story of HMP Woodhill. Told in their own words, three families investigate what happened to their boys. (October 13-17). Age guidance 16+
