Richard Coyle (The Player Kings, Macbeth, Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore) will star in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird for its major new UK tour, which opens at Leeds Playhouse in September (September 8-October 4), before northern dates at the Lowry in Salford (January 13-24, 2026); Sheffield Lyceum (January 27-February 7); Newcastle Theatre Royal (April 28-May 2) and Liverpool Empire (May 12-16).

Coyle is reprising the role of attorney Atticus Finch, which he played to critical acclaim in the 2022 West End production.

He said: “Playing Finch in the West End was a profound privilege. I’m honoured to be returning to this rich and deeply resonant role across the country. And I’m really excited to premiere the tour in my native county – Yorkshire; a very special homecoming."

Set in 1934 in Alabama, To Kill a Mockingbird was inspired by novelist Harper Lee’s own childhood. The book has sold more than 45 million copies and won the Pulitzer prize for literature. It was also for many years at the top of banned-book lists in many backward-looking US states.

Oscar-winning writer Aaron Sorkin's stage adaptation is paired with direction by leading American stage director Bartlett Sher.

Coyle will be joined by Anna Munden and Gabriel Scott as his children Scout and Jem, within a large cast of 21 performers.

Aaron Sorkin is of course a writing legend, with decades of success on stage and screen as creator of The West Wing and other series and movies, including The Trial of the Chicago Seven.

Bartlett Sher spent 10 years in charge of New York’s Lincoln Center Theatre, where he directed often award-winning productions including My Fair Lady, The King and I and South Pacific, which have toured internationally.
