Jane Asher and Samantha Womack will star together as the Queen and her dresser respectively in Daisy Goodwin’s play By Royal Appointment at York Theatre Royal (November 10-14).
The play, which premiered last year, marked the theatre debut of screenwriter Daisy Goodwin - best known as the creator of hit ITV historical drama Victoria. The work explores the relationship between the Queen and her dresser, and how the pair created the public image of the world’s longest-reigning monarch. They will be joined by David Robb as the dress designer and Matthew Cottle as the queen's milliner.

The late Queen was famous for her discretion in public but often, claims the play, expressed what she really thought through her wardrobe. By Royal Appointment is a funny, poignant and celebratory drama about the kind of power that only a Queen can wield, charming the world with her coats and admonishing her family with carefully chosen hats. It's a behind-the-scenes look at the world of our most popular monarch and the image she presented to the world.
