Kara Tointon (Eastenders, Mr Selfridge and Strictly winner) will star in the RSC production of The Constant Wife, touring across the UK next year, opening at Blackpool Grand (January 16-17), before visiting York Theatre Royal (January 26-31); Liverpool Playhouse (March 10-14); Lowry, Salford (March 17-21) and Leeds Grand (April 13-18).

Based on the comedy by Somerset Maugham and directed by the Royal Shakespeare Company's co-artistic director, Tamara Harvey, the tour follows follows a successful run at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-on-Avon earlier this year and will also run on board Queen Mary II for a transatlantic crossing.

Set in 1927, The Constant Wife centres on Constance, a wife and mother whose seemingly perfect life masks the fact that her husband is openly devoted not only to her but also to his mistress - Constance's best friend. Maugham’s original comedy was written in 1926 and described as “a sparkling comedy of ill manners”. Wade’s new version follows her Olivier award-winning Home, I’m Darling and her recent television success with Rivals.

Tamara Harvey said: “It will be exciting to get back into the rehearsal room with a new company, led by the brilliant Kara Tointon, and for us to bring Laura Wade’s razor-sharp script to life.”

David Pugh, the five-time Olivier and two-time Tony award-winning producer, said: “I’m delighted to have commissioned Laura Wade to adapt this comedy and to be working with the Royal Shakespeare Company on this new production. For me, in the times we’re in, there is nothing better than to bring comedy to audiences in theatres all around the UK.”
