Martin McDonagh revival at Liverpool Everyman

Liverpool Everyman is to mount a major revival of Martin McDonagh's black comedy A Skull in Connemara (February 20-March 15 2027) by acclaimed director Chris Sonnex, following his hit production of McDonagh's The Lieutenant of Inishmore two years ago and in advance of McDonagh's new movie, Wild Horse Nine, out in November.

Chris said, “Coming back to the Everyman after the glorious comic book carnage of Inishmore is a complete honour. A Skull in Connemara is a completely different beast; a play about death, grief, revenge, and the ridiculous ways we try to live with all three. And of course it’s got that extraordinary McDonagh trick of making us laugh when we really shouldn’t.”

Mick and Mairtin have been hired as gravediggers to exhume the bones of those who died years before to make space for more bodies. But in this tiny village, rumours and secrets are never far below ground - and you never know what might get dug up with the dead...

Nathan Powell, creative director at the Everyman and Playhouse, said: "After the huge success of The Lieutenant of Inishmore, we’re excited to welcome Chris back. Blending dark comedy and biting satire, McDonagh’s brilliant play is sure to be hugely entertaining."

Chris Sonnex is currently the artistic director and joint CEO of Cardboard Citizens, and co-founder of the London Ticket Bank. He has previously worked as an associate artist at the Royal Court and Hightide Theatre. As a director, his work has been presented by the Almeida Theatre, Donmar Warehouse, Guildhall, Northern Stage, Soho Theatre, the Royal Court and others.  

Martin McDonagh's work hardly need introduction: from The Beauty Queen of Leenane and A Skull in Connemara to The Lieutenant of Inishmore, The Pillowman, Hangmen and movies such as Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and In Bruges, he is one of Britih theatre's most celebrated and creative writers.
