A major figure in the British theatre world, who has already been involved in the work of three major Manchester theatre institutions, is about to become joint CEO of a fourth.

Sheena Wrigley, currently executive director at the city's newest and largest venue, Factory International, will in 2026 become the new executive director and joint chief executive - alongside artistic director and joint-CEO Selina Cartmell - of the Royal Exchange Theatre, which will then be in its 50th anniversary year.

The new partnership cements the Exchange’s commitment to developing world-leading theatre reminiscent of its middle years, when it was generally referred to as the "National Theatre of the North".

Originally from Manchester, Wrigley's career has already included several high-profile leadership roles. From 2017 she was the director of the city's commercial theatres, the Palace & Opera House. Before that she spent eight years as chief executive of West Yorkshire (now Leeds) Playhouse; executive director at HOME Manchester, where from 2015 she played a leading role in the successful opening of the new venue, and was head of theatres, arts and festivals for Bradford District, leading the city’s arts strategy and major venues.

Sheena has also worked for Arts Council England; been a board member of UK Theatre - the industry body representing theatres across the UK; a visiting fellow at the University of Leeds, and is currently a trustee of Shakespeare North Playhouse in Prescot.

She said,"I'm thrilled to be joining the Royal Exchange and very excited to be working alongside Selina Cartmell, to lead this next stage of the Exchange’s journey.

"Growing up in Manchester, I was inspired by the radical intimacy of this theatre's extraordinary auditorium. It's a huge privilege to be part of shaping a new Exchange with Selina as it celebrates its 50th anniversary, strengthening its place at the heart of contemporary Manchester while building on its brilliant past."

Selina added,"Sheena's impressive track record speaks for itself. I can’t think of a better partner to help guide the future of this remarkable theatre as we celebrate our 50th anniversary next year. "
